Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every child should have the opportunity to enjoy independent reading with a book they have chosen on their own. I'd love my students to think of independent reading to be fun, desirable, and relaxing!
I have 25 fourth grade students in my classroom.
Our classroom is a second home to most of them. In some cases, my students would rather spend all day there. They are energetic, hard working, and bright. Each of them brings their own qualities and personalities to the classroom. They particularly enjoy reading independently, math, and especially science. My students thrive with projects, movement breaks, and each other. They are silly, funny, and definitely make each day interesting.
My students struggle while facing the outcomes of difficult financial situations. We are part of a low income town. Every child in the district receives free breakfast and lunch. A lot of our children receive ELL and Title 1 services. Our school is working hard to provide resources and materials to every student and teacher. However, our students notice they don't have a lot readily available to them. They are very appreciative of what they are given, however! They are proud to be part of this school.
My Project
With the materials I am requesting, my students will be able to associate reading independently with cozy, relaxing, fun thoughts. They will be encouraged to pick up a book at their own level and read for pleasure.
Currently, my students don't use this time to their full potential. They will sit at their desks, holding their heads up with their hands, looking incredibly bored. With this project, students will have a place to go and read quietly and enjoyable.
Another benefit of these materials is a cool down zone. Sometimes, students can get upset for various reasons. It is always comforting to have somewhere to go and calm down rather than at a desk. I think this would help a lot of students struggling with needing a place to relax and cool down.
Finally, they will learn patience and sharing. Students will understand that not everyone can use this together all at once. They will need to take turns and wait for their turn. These are life long skills that are absolutely essential!
This project will make my classroom a more relaxing, inviting environment.
They will be able to recognize there is a zone to go to in order to read independently and to calm down. They will learn life long skills such as patience and sharing, along with reading for pleasure. Students should never stop reading, and with these materials they will associate good feelings with reading for pleasure. My students will be forever touched because of these changes!
