"Chess helps you to concentrate, improve your logic. It teaches you to play by the rules and take responsibility for your actions, how to problem solve in an uncertain environment."
At our school, chess is more than a game.
I teach at a Title I Charter School where most of the students qualify for the free lunch program.
In my first year at the school, with a lack of funding for electives and extracurricular activity, I decided to implement a chess club at the school. Since then, chess has gained interest from students.
What has pleased me is that students who may not be great academic students have gained confidence through playing chess. This confidence is a building block to helping these students realize that they can excel academically through hard work.
Chess is now an everyday class available to students.
As our chess program grows, I am constantly getting new students who are interested in playing chess. Since I have only one chess class, the combination of beginner level students with experienced makes it difficult at times to manage.
The Chess Magnet School program is a computer chess program that teaches players from beginner to expert. The teacher can assign specific assignments based on playing ability to have all students actively engaged.
As a teacher, I can manage all students online and even work with students in other aspects, while the rest of the class is working online with the program.
Our school does not have very many extracurricular activities.
There is no funding for after school sports or clubs and I believe chess can be an activity that defines our school. Chess is activity that can appeal to a wide range of students and provide a fun and educational program for our school.
The Chess Magnet School program will allow students to learn both in the classroom and at home.
