Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
By the end of the school year I want my students to have experienced becoming an engineer (of Legos for now) and have a true love of reading. I want them to become curious about the world around them and find that they can explore it further through building and reading about it.
My English Language Development 1st grade classroom is made up of 25 diverse students that come from a variety of countries and attend a southern Arizona Title 1 school.
My school prides itself on having a STEM focus that provides a mission that I truly believe in. We are training future Arizona Scientists, Technologists, Engineers-Artists and Mathematicians. 100% of my students are on free and reduced lunch and come from low-income households. I have two motto's in my classroom. One is "Don't give up," and "Oh the places they will go." They are a bright group of students that understand how important reading is and love every chance they get to play.
My Project
The students will use the Legos to not only play but transform into little engineers, building what just might be a future skyscraper. Once a student begins to experiment with Legos, it stimulates their creativity and imagination which in turn leads to an active mind. Math, problem solving, concentration, fine motor and social skills will seamlessly find a way to present teachable moments in my classroom. The timers will be put to good use in maintaining pace in lessons, helping students keep focused, keep track of math facts and sight word practice, and encourage time management. The leveled book sets will give the students the confidence they need to become readers for life.
These donations will help support my students in reading, math and play.
I want to instill in them that with this combination, the possibilities are endless with what they can create, dream, and learn about.
