Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of our fabulous fourth graders (98%) come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these children have responsibilities at home that make it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school (making dinner, caring for younger siblings because parents are at work, etc.) They take what they have, however, and make the most of it. They may not be able to provide pencils or paper, but they are never without a smile.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey recently came through and did some major damage to our classroom. Among the casualties were our classroom library books. There are certain objects that can turn a classroom into an inviting area where kids want to be, and an engaging classroom library is one of those. Before Harvey came, we had a cozy little nook in the corner of our room, stocked with interesting series of books that the kids did not want to put down. The reality of our library now is not so cozy. I have dug out all of my extra books so that we at least have something to choose from, but the kids are not pleased. As for the home away from home feeling, it has gone with Harvey. In order to restock and reinstate our classroom to what it used to be, I would love to add some high interest books to our classroom library. In addition to these books, some salt lamps and clean air plants would create the perfect area of calm after our storm.
