Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently The American Lung Association announced that our city has the poorest air quality in the nation! Consequently, many of our students have breathing issues including allergies and asthma. The addition of an air purifier would certain help us all breathe easier!
Our class is located in a small neighborhood school in central California.
We are a public, high poverty school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of the children walk to school, as we have no school busing system. The families are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish, Punjabi, or Mandarin at home. The children have living situations as varied as they are. Some live in nuclear families, some with single parents, others with foster parents, and still others in multi-family homes. We have military families in our classroom, in addition to firefighters, and oilfield workers. In our kindergarten classroom, there are students with Autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays. While we are a multicultural classroom, we stand united in our desire to learn.
My Project
The ability to breathe clean air is something many people take for granted. Our community is rich with agriculture with numerous large farms growing crops such as cotton, almonds, grapes, and oranges. These plants produce high pollen counts which render many of my students breathless and miserable. Additionally, our city is surrounded by mountains on three sides, which traps the air around our city. In fact, our local air quality board issues several health alerts a year where children and other people at risk are encouraged to stay inside to avoid the damaging effects of our poor air quality. The addition of a large, heavy duty air filter will help my students breathe easier in our classroom. This device will help circulate the air in our classroom at least six times per hour trapping airborne irritants and odors.
Having an air purifier in our classroom will make our room a better place.
This resource will help not only the students currently enrolled in our classroom, but countless other future children. With the help of generous donors, such as yourself, we will turn this dream project into a reality!
