Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is made up of several different cultures and socioeconomic statuses, with the majority being below poverty. They are a very unique group of kids with huge hearts and great ambitions. We foster the attitude of class community, and each student strives to be wonderful members. Our school is surrounded by a wonderful, supportive community that strives to help out, but resources are limited because of low economic status. All of my students are engaged in their learning and eduction, and this will be another resource that can help them reach their potential.
My Project
Students need to develop critical thinking skills fostered by group work, as well as leadership opportunities. This project is inspired by the kit "Breakout" from Breakout.edu that allows students to manipulate numbers, using math skills, to find the codes to different locks to hopefully "breakout" of the situation in a certain time frame. The locks can be reset to any code which allows for multiple games. All of the contents, including the locks, secret ink pen, flashlight, boxes, and other materials, make up the contents of the "Breakout" boxes.
These items will be used to create engaging lessons, inspired by Breakout.edu, that will help create a environment conducive to learning.
This will also allow me to differentiate lessons that will meet the needs of all of my students. Every student is different. The way they learn, and the style of learning, is unique to all children. Education today isn't sitting in a chair listening to the teacher lecture hour upon hour. These materials will allow the students to move about, and challenge their thinking and their imagination.
