Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students enjoy school immensely. Sometimes they get so excited about learning it seems they will just burst. It is infectious.
My students are from a high-poverty region and are predominantly bilingual or English Language Learners.
They and their families are motivated learners. Some of our parents even come to school to learn along with their children. They are all excited to discover and explore. My amazing kids are deserving of so much more than their economic status currently allows and I want to do everything I can to help them reach a brighter future.
My Project
Amidst the escalating tensions that have come since this election, I have looked for areas of hope. And personally, my hope is with our future, with all of our children.
While my young students may not have been directly subjected to the recent horrors that are taking place in schools nationally, they are aware of it and do carry a great deal of fear and stress.
Instead of just crying with my students and having a generalized depression, I want to do something. And I am hoping you can help me do it.
Recently I received a plaque with the message, BElieve THEre is GOOD in the World. Inspired by this I want these two messages to be communicated loudly and clearly all over my school ... our community ... and beyond.
I plan to share this plaque with my 3rd-5th grade students and talk about the messages. I want them to be able to see and recognize good amidst all the bad. I want them to know good is there, even if there is only a small morsel at times. Secondly, I want to inspire them to be part of what is good. I want them to help others in trouble, to hug someone in stress, to care and have compassion for others. These are universal messages that I believe, that I hope, all people share, no matter the political, religious, or policy beliefs.
Once they understand what it means to believe the good and to be the good, the students will receive t-shirts (youth to adult sizes) printed with that message. The students will wear the shirts as part of their uniform on Fridays. This way there will be regular visible reminders to act on the messages. Hopefully, the ideas will become a natural part of their being.
