My students need 3 bookcases, 25 dictionaries, 1 carpet for partner reading and building community, 3 bookshelves, 20 sets of read-along and chapter books, and 1 listening center.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students absolutely love reading. Whether it's informational texts by the great Gail Gibbons or Freckle Juice by Judy. I want my students to be life long readers who love to read.
To understand the world, one must understand a place like Mississippi.
This was a great quote by renowned Mississippian author, William Faulkner. My 2nd grade class consist of 21 smiling faces who come in every morning ready to learn. My students come from backgrounds where reading is not always a top priority, but my school ( which is home to more than 600 2nd and 3rd graders) does a great job of promoting reading by holding monthly contests and awarding the top class who reads the most books. My students live in rather poor neighborhoods with limited parental involvement. Most of them don't have access to books or even the Internet. Some of them live in such conditions that are beyond our imagination, but they all deserve the opportunity and access to reading materials.
My Project
Imagine walking into a room and finding any book on any topic. All the books are organized on bookshelves for easy access. You know... Kind of like walking into a public library, but you don't have to leave the classroom because everything you need to learn about Alligators to penguins is at your fingertips.
By incorporating informational texts, chapter and picture books, my students will feel like they are at the public library. As a result, their vocabulary will increase as well as their comprehension about different subjects.
If my project is funded, my students will have access to picture and chapter books, dictionaries, and informational texts which will help increase their knowledge about the world the live in as well as increasing their vocabulary and reading fluency.
My project will help my students become the change we all want to see in the world. This project would not be possible without the kindness of strangers.
