Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi. Thanks for reading. I am a 5th grade teacher in NYC. I teach 28 students all subjects. We have spent much of this year preparing for the exhausting ELA exam which ENDED last week! As a teacher, I feel rather lousy having spent so much MANDATED time on this. Most of my students are ELL and read far below grade level. I wish to liven up our lessons with a science/math detective unit. I am sad to say that we do not have any resources available at my school for science. I spend endless hours trying to create lesson plans and making copies. I still ask my dad in Ohio to gather material for us! :)
So for our upcoming unit:
We will become forensic scientists and work like real detectives. I have already planned lessons on fingerprinting, chromatography, mystery powders and a culminating week long Mystery Festival.
We would like to ask you to help us fund a Rock Detective unit to go along with our mystery unit. After spending two hours online this evening looking for more science lessons, I came across this program. It would FIT in with our mystery theme and the students would LOVE this activity! I would even be able to share it with another fifth grade teacher.

How the "Become a Rock Detective" Program Works
Rock Detective Kits contain samples, each with Mystery Questions for kids to solve and Answer Sheets for teachers.
By handling and examining the samples and thinking about the Mystery Questions, students begin to solve basic earth science concepts on their own -- they get the "Oh, Wow!" of science
At a "Staff Meeting" described on the Answer Sheet, all students gather to share their ideas and help solve the mysteries.
This kit includes everything we need and more! I must also add that it will be used over and over again! I have been teaching for 8 years and do NOT plan on stopping.
