I am the librarian and technology teacher for over 500 K-2 students each week. I am so lucky to work with every student in our school and strive to meet the needs of each child. We have a diverse population of learners in our school and I get to teach them all!
My favorite thing about my students is the genuine thirst for knowledge.
Each time a class enters my library, I am met with eager children ready to learn!
The boys and girls enjoy coming to the library and participating in many different lessons and activities. Most of all, they enjoy choosing books to take home! For some, our library is the only library they visit and depend on us for their family's reading material.
My Project
I love teaching my first grade library students how to choose good fit books and about the habits of good readers. My unit on "Becoming a Reading Expert!" sets all students up for success, whether or not they are great readers at this point.
These materials will help to instill a love of literacy in the hearts of these young readers.
The folders will be used so each student can create a Reading Expert Journal, where we will organize and keep all of their Reading Expert research! The books will be used to add interest and variety to our lessons on good fit books. These books relate beautifully to choosing good fit books in the library.
The whisper phone and pointers will allow the children to practice their skills of reading to self and discovering that words, and opportunities to read, are everywhere! I am very excited just thinking about the level of engagement these materials will bring to my first graders.
