Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in Room 19 consists of reading together, reading independently, reading in partners and reading to the group. As you can tell the students are immersed in books. My students truly love to read and love all kinds of books,
Our school is located in a low income neighborhood in Northern California.
Many of my students come to school happy, but have experienced a lot of trauma in their lives. They enjoy 'losing' themselves in books, pretending to act out stories, and getting to know characters in familiar books. Many of my students do not do extra curricular or enrichment activities, I want to give them these opportunities in the books that they read.
My Project
My students will use these leveled texts in independent reading, partner reading and when they read aloud to the class. It is important that they are able to read a book appropriate for them to the class to gain confidence and the ability to speak academically in front of their peers. They will use the fictional stories for reader's theater and simply enjoy reading a story to themselves.
If this project gets funded it will give my students the opportunity to become life long readers.
These books will support them academically and emotionally. They find happiness in books that they may not find at home. Most of all it will give them a literature enriched life, which we a need and deserve.
