Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think about all the times that books have taken you to a new and magical place. Literacy opens doors for our students; however, many of my students are reading far below grade level.
I have a class of 31 curious fourth grade students.
They are super eager and excited to learn as much as they can. The students come from a high poverty community where there is a high degree of gang presence. Our school is a Title I school with over 90% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home and will be the first in their family to go to college.
My Project
Our school utilizes Balanced Literacy approach for our reading and writing instruction. Balanced Literacy focuses heavily on creating a genuine appreciation for literature. This is difficult for students who are not reading at grade level and do not have access to books at their level. The books from this project will expand my classroom library to better serve my students and give them a personal space to store their books.
Many of the books in my current classroom library are beyond the reading level of my students, which causes frustration and dislike toward reading.
With high-interest books that are at their reading level, my students can make tremendous progress this year.
