My school has set a goal this year to improve science test scores and I am ready to work as hard as I can to see my students improve. Science is an extremely important subject and finding the time in the school day to adequately teach this subject can in itself be a challenge. The way to achieve this goal is to integrate the subject of science with math. Much of the science objectives can be taught in conjunction with math, especially in the measurement unit. In order to effectively do this, I need hands-on manipulatives to use in math and science. My philosophy on education is that children learn by doing. Instead of reading from the textbook each day, I would like to give them real life experiences that allow them to actually do the concept I'm teaching instead of just reading about it. In science, students are constantly observing the world around them to see changes made and then make conclusions about what is going on. I would like for my students to see what changes and actually measure that change. By using thermometers, balance scales, tape measures, rulers, this idea will come to life in the eyes of my students. I would also like them to use unifex cubes to build a geometrical model of our schoolyard and then sketch the front, top, and side views of their models. Please help me achieve my goal. By using hands-on materials consistently in the classroom, I will not only raise test scores, but also interest in science and math for all students.
