Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an eighth-grade English teacher in the South Bronx. My students need listening centers and a classroom set of books in order to improve their reading by being able to hear books on tape and read along.
Ninety-nine percent of the students I teach receive free lunch and sixty percent speak English as a second language. Most of my students are far below their appropriate reading level.
For many of my students, books are their only link to the world around them. Their faces light up when they find characters and situations that they can connect to. But we have very limited resources. For example, my students are excited about reading and want to read the book "Holes," but we simply don't have enough copies for everyone. Also, while some students are okay reading on their own, others are really struggling.
A classroom listening center and a set of books would be an invaluable resource.
When we are reading a novel my students love to hear it read aloud. These listening centers will enhance that joy, while also giving my students a chance to hear fluid English read as they follow along reading silently. It would also allow me to work one-on-one with students who need extra attention. Finally, reading together as a class would provide my students with the
chance to share their favorite parts of the book with one another in small groups!
In order to help my students be successful readers and to help prepare them for gratifying futures that include reading, they need individual attention, as well as a great deal of exposure to hearing and reading English.
It is time for them to take their joy and excitement about reading to the next level and become better readers while doing it!
