Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"One day last spring, Louis, a butcher, turned into a fish. Big lips. A tail. A salmon." This is called, "The Give-Away Lead." I am a Speech Language Pathologist working at the elementary school level with students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade. Specifically, this proposal is intended for my third and fourth grade students with special needs. My students come from low-income homes and reading is limited.
Typical students who are learning how to capture the reader's attention with their writing is already hard. Now imagine, my students, those with speech and language disorders attempting to capture the reader's attention with their writing. Often times my students will leave out crucial details, eliminate suspense, and demonstrate many grammatical errors.
But I plan to prevent my students from writing "ordinary" pieces. I have selected several picture books that will help teach my students how to "crack open" general words, use stronger verbs, unpack a "heavy sentence," use sensory details, write with a voice, create a dramatic scene, summarize information, sharpen the focus, focus on "a slice of the pie," narrow the time focus, describe the setting, describe the character, craft a lead, experiment with endings, and craft a title.
You will make it possible for my students to become well-known authors within their school. As a result, you will be making a tremendous impact on their lives by building their self-confidence.
