Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My little first graders come to school every morning with a smile, eager to learn! They came to school from a variety of backgrounds, with skills ranging from students who can read a short chapter book, to those who are beginning readers. Some come from struggling families, some with single-parent homes, and some with little to no parent support. In spite of any challenges they face, these little people show up ready to work. Work we do! For six and a half hours, these wonderful children stick with difficult tasks, such as writing complete paragraphs, reading difficult text, and adding three numbers.
More impressively, they are navigating the difficult waters of getting along with each other and becoming a learning community.
As a teacher, when I hear my students who have finished their work ask, "Can I help anyone?" I know they are an amazing group!
My Project
Learning how to read is the most important job of my students and first grade; they are working hard each and every day. Over half of my class however, is not yet reading at grade level. One of the interventions I am using is a computer program called Lexia, which is really making a positive difference in reading. Students use a computer or iPad to log on to their account and practice reading skills that they need. This program tailors the learning to the student, and gives them a goal of weekly required minutes for improvement.
I am writing this project to help my students improve in reading!
They love logging on and learning through technology devices, and will often offer to stay in during their recess to have a chance to use the iPad. I am requesting another iPad so that more students will be able to have success with their reading. Their faces light up with pride when they move up a level in Lexia, and the class celebrates them with a certificate and roaring applause! I want all my students reading at grade level or above by the end of the school year, and an iPad would be a wonderful help!
