I work with a group of third through fifth-grade students in an enrichment class in three different elementary schools within the school district. Our district is one where most of the students receive free and reduced lunch. Many come from hard-working families where English is not the main language spoken. Our school is located in Long Island NY a suburb of New York City. I like to push my students with many STEM projects throughout the year. I would like to expand this year to add some creative art projects to push the group to do STEAM based projects this year. My students are always eager to get their hands on the materials to help them be creative.I am hoping to keep them motivated by giving them access to new and unique materials.
Last school year I began working with my students on coding and circuits using Makey Makey. I would like to continue with them this year by allowing them to create on their own using circuits with coin batteries and LED lights.
I want to have the materials available for their creativity and imagination to run wild!
Allowing them to combine these materials with simple items such as paper I know they can come up with some amazing projects!
These students are motivated to experiment and try new things, however budget restrictions at times make it difficult to get what we need.
