I am a resource teacher of students with disabilities that are functioning two, three and sometimes four grades below grade level. Our school has five literacy goals. One of the goals is to read 25 books during the school year. My students have great difficulty completing this goal. My goal for the 2006-2007 school year is for all my students to reach this goal.
Every day the students have sustained silent reading for 15 minutes in at least one class. Friday is the day we have this reading time in my class. The library does not have many books that are high interest books and on a level where they can read them. I have taught elementary school in the past and need a classroom library that would be appropriate for my students to read in my classroom and to be able to check out from me to read in their other classes.
I strongly feel if my students had more books available to them that are high interest and on a level they can read, they would have more incentive to achieve the 25 book goal.
