This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
High poverty (92%), high minority, urban students need instructional technology (ELMO) to improve literacy skills! My 11th and 12th grade students lack close reading and analytical skills needed to survive in post secondary opportunities and in the job market.
Being able to read texts, mark the important/ significant parts, and synthesize ideas are essential components of literacy! My students' average score on the ACT is 16.2, and Reading and English sections are the hardest for them. I need to be able to place a literary selection on the ELMO, project it onto the wall, read chunks of the text, ask them what is important, and mark the text appropriately. My students score so low on standardized tests because no one has shown or modeled to them how to mark texts and perform close readings. These skills are essential for them to survive at institutions of higher learning and in the workforce.
An ELMO projector will help me teach/model to my students how to interpret and analyze texts. We can work together on notetaking skills, questioning techniques, and developing analysis and synthesis skills. To further promote literacy, students can place their handwritten essays on the ELMO (most of my students have absolutely no computer access at home, so essays are handwritten,) and we can peer edit as a class and synthesize group knowledge. Because my students are visual and kinesthetic learners, an ELMO would greatly assist us in improving our literacy.
PLEASE, PLEASE assist high poverty students who WANT to go to college and succeed in life. We need instructional technology, this ELMO, to help us increase literacy skills and help prepare for college and the workforce. One small tool, the ELMO, will be used in so many ways to help my students become better readers and writers. Literacy skills are cross-curricular, so helping me provide a foundation in close reading, notetaking, and literary analysis skills will positively impact my students in all academic subjects. Literacy is a lifelong gift that will help my students succeed in college and in the workforce. Please donate to a great cause- generational literacy skills.
