Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diligent, engaged, and insightful. What is more, they love to read! When we begin the reading portion of our day, they are audibly enthusiastic. We are scrambling to put together class sets of not only fiction, but non-fiction books that are significant and relevant.
My students are mainly Hispanic, living in an urban poor neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Despite living in crowded, difficult conditions, they come to school hungry to learn. My students come from homes with decent, hard-working parents who want better for their children. It is an honor to teach them, as they are willing to try their best every day, work really hard, and persevere through difficult material. The first thing my students see when they walk in the door is a poster telling them how to get into college. My expectations throughout the year are focused on this goal. Our school is staffed by dedicated teachers who choose to teach in this area of high need.
My Project
While we have several fiction selections to read as a class, we are in dire need of non-fiction books of high quality, and that engage the reader with fascinating material. Our new Common Core standards are great, but we now need materials with which to achieve them. My students need 20 copies of A Really Short History of Nearly Everything to improve non-fiction literacy.
Not only will the funding of this project benefit this class of fifth graders, but it will benefit two other classes of fifth graders this year alone.
We share resources with each other regularly, and we will continue to use these books in the coming years, as long as they hold up. Our school does not throw out books, we wear them out!
