My students need book bags to store all their donated books over the summer.
This project expired on September 27, 2012.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Our students face many challenges when it comes to reading. Many have just arrived to this country and are trying to acclimate to their surroundings while facing the demands and pressures of intense academic achievement. We have worked hard all year and we do not want to lose it over the summer!
Our students are bilingual and mostly come from central and South America.
Our school is small and lacks many resources which only add to the many challenges these children face. They are required to take the state exams even when they have no knowledge of the content or a severely struggling with reading. It is important that they have a library of books that range in levels as we have beginning readers to advanced in our classes.
This project works in conjunction with our current other projects to provide a summer package that the students can take home with them and practice. My teacher-partner and I will have a website that will be accessible for the students to check reading assignments and will host a book exchange over the summer with the other students to keep reading alive over the summer. The "summer slide" can be particularly detrimental as students can lose and forget valuable skills that we have worked on all year long. This particular project will provide bags for each student.
Reading is the key to success!
It is as simple as that. I have had projects funded so far with DonorsChoose and my students have felt so special and honored that people have cared so much to support them.
