Help Turn Our Classroom into a Coffee Shop! (Part Two)
My students need a classroom that honors their ability to make good choices and provides them with opportunities to do so! I am requesting a bookshelf, console table, string lights, and charging station.
My students are creative, thoughtful, problem-solvers. In my classes, I have students who are dedicated to attending college, some who have never thought about attending college, and some, due to what goes on beyond our school walls, who can hardly plan beyond this week. In other words, my students are diverse: they come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, each with a unique story to tell.
There is one thing I have found in them to be truly unifying: my students are intimately aware of issues in their communities and are dedicated to being part of the solutions.
Nestled in Federal Way, WA, the students who come through my classroom are learning to become compassionate activists: engaging in their communities for the betterment of our society.
My Project
By providing flexible seating in the classroom, this project gives students voice and choice for where they can be most productive. In other words, it treats them as adults. Just like we do when we enter into a Starbucks, flexible seating in the classroom provides students with the opportunity to learn to make positive choices for themselves.
The fact is: students care more about the quality of their work when they feel like they're being treated with respect.
This includes creating an environment around them that respects their ability to make good choices and also demands respect from them.
This is my second funding project for this vision of a new and holistic classroom. The first project funded two new collaborative work nooks with comfy chairs, area rugs, and tables, two standing tables with chair options, and new lighting in the form of floor lamps.
This project will fund many of the smaller, yet also very important items: chalkboard paint for a few areas on our walls, a charging station for student phones (this is really useful in a 21st Century classroom), a hot water heater and mugs for tea, new bookshelves, and some other items that help create an environment of respect and quality work!
