Help Transition Aged Special Education Students Learn to Live Independently!
Help me give my students a functional and accessible apartment to practice life skills including an induction cooktop, adjustable tables, and an Echo Dot.
The Transition Program in our school district assists 18-21 year old students in special education who are in need of comprehensive transition services. The goal is for students in the Transition Program increase their ability to live independently and positively contribute to their community. Instruction occurs in a variety of settings including school, community, and volunteer experience placements.
Students in our program have a variety of disabilities such as Autism, Intellectual and Learning Disabilities, Communication and Speech Disorders, as well as Other Health Impairments.
A majority of the students receive Social Security and Medicaid and qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Often our students come from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds and do not have the resources to support activities at school and in the community.
My Project
My students are a part of a Transition Program through the school district. They are 18 to 21 year olds who are significantly impacted by their disabilities. We are lucky to have an Apartment set up for students to practice life skills such as cooking, using a washer, dryer, and dishwasher. Unfortunately some of our students are unable to access these items due to the impact of their disability.
We would like an Echo Dot to connect to Smart Plugs for students to voice control or use a switch to control items in the Apartment.
This would help students with limited mobility access elements of the kitchen they have been unable to access in the past. We would also like an induction cooktop that does not get hot to the touch. Last, we are hoping to get two adjustable tables for students who use wheelchairs and students who use standers to make the Apartment accessible to all students in our program.
We would like to provide all students in the Transition Program the opportunity to practice functional life skills at school. The more we practice these skills at school, the better chance students have of generalizing these skills to their every day life once they age out of public school services.
