Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Second graders take great pride in their writing, but when you allow them to create an art project to go along with it, that's when the whole process becomes kind of magical! With a variety of art materials, kids can make the writing they work so hard on come to life
I have a diverse classroom of 24 funny, active, imaginative 2nd graders.
They each have their own unique strengths and challenges that they bring to school each and every day. Many are fragile learners for a variety of reasons... English is a second language, poverty, learning disabilities, or a stressful home environment. I strive to make the classroom a comfortable haven where all students can feel safe and grow as learners.
My Project
Students will use the art supplies to illustrate and enhance various writing projects throughout the year. These writing projects include seasonal writing, non-fiction writing, narrative stories, and writing projects that reflect learning from social studies and science units. They will also write reflective pieces about books they read. Creating projects and illustrations to go along with these writing pieces will help students to gain a better understanding of how important illustrations are in helping to understand and remember what they read. This supports both our reading and writing curriculum. In addition to that, being able to make projects that illustrate their writing is highly motivating and enjoyable for kids. It's pretty fun for me too! I just love seeing their creativity and individuality reflected in their writing, illustrations and projects! When you combine writing with art, the end result is kids that are excited to show off their work!
Currently our art supplies consist of a very limited amount of construction paper, glue sticks, and some markers and crayons.
Having a variety of art supplies to use in the classroom is just so exciting for kids. Making a project with paint or glitter or the paper color that you want is extremely exciting and motivating to a 2nd grader. When you allow kids to create with a variety of materials, it takes an academic subject area like writing and makes it a fun, hands-on experience for them!
