My students need an easel to be able to reference class created charts and useful information to use as a resource in a print-rich classroom environment.
The great thing about knowledge is that no one can take it away from you!
My students are Colorado fifth graders (many still learning English) and ready to learn and thrive with their new knowledge.
As a Title I school, we have a high poverty rate, which limits resources from home. My students are one of the most diverse in the area. They come from all over the world as both refugees and immigrants. Many parents are new to the country and still learning English. My students are faced with the challenge of difficulty with homework and reinforcement from their school day once they are home. Our families want the best for their children and support us as much as they can. They appreciate their education and work hard toward their future goals.
My Project
My students do a lot of work together and generate great ideas to share with the class. Having these conversations while recording their thinking, encourages and inspires more thinking. The most powerful tool is to be able to go back and look at the work we created without having to erase the board or turn off the projector. An easel in the classroom will allow us to record ideas together on chart paper and keep it up for later reference. Having a print-rich classroom means students are constantly reading and reinforcing what they have learned. A display easel allows us to revisit the conversation by having a record of our thoughts.
The mobility of the easel will also enable us to move it around the room for small group lessons, student directed discussion, and whole class discussion.
With our thoughts recorded on chart paper, students will also be able to go back and look through past thinking to use as a resource. Having a thought recorded is a confidence booster for students and validates the contributions they make to the class.
