My Students

These students have spent their entire school lives in the pandemic. They are wonderful little people who want to learn and who try their best every day. They are very engaged with our classroom technology and we spend a lot of stationary time at our desks on a screen as a way to individualize learning. This is important, I know!

However, over the last couple of years, as we've focused a lot on technology as a way to equalize learning during the pandemic, I have noticed a decline in students engaging with important tactile learning tools, such as books, writing materials, and other physical objects that promote non-passive learning.

I worry that without these critical experiences, students will be too reliant on a screen to tell them if they've done something well enough.

My goal is to have technology return to its place as a valuable tool, while increasing engagement with our physical classroom space through flexible seating and other tools for mobile hands-on learning!

My Project

These First Grade students have been in pandemic learning for their entire school lives. While technology has been an invaluable tool to equalize learning and engage kids with our daily content, it has also kept them glued to their chairs and screens for too long. We need to enliven our physical space with flexible options that will make kids want to leave their seats to engage with important physical objects so important to learning at this age, like books, writing/drawing materials, and manipulatives. Their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities will thank us!
