Help Them Learn to Love to Read and Spread Compassion
Help me give my students a wide range of high-interest, high-quality literature to capture their love of reading and to expand their understanding of the world.
My students are middle school students in rural Maine. They come to the middle school from several surrounding towns. Here, they work on small teams to learn in a multi-age, integrated learning setting. They have a lot of voice and choice in their learning and we are working to empower them to be leaders in our community and engaged citizens.
Because we are a rural school, we would like to build connections to others around the world.
We are attempting to read diverse literature so that students can find themselves in books, as well as explore other stories to better understand the world.
We are building our classroom library to include books selected by ProjectLIT, so that all students can find stories they can connect to and learn from.
My Project
Project LIT books have been carefully selected to include high-quality literature about diversity in our world. Some allow readers to become immersed in worlds that are unlike their own, while others may finally give readers a chance to find themselves in a book.
These books will help my students to become compassionate readers and citizens of a diverse world.
The selections will help them understand the struggles of others and may provide advice for those who are already struggling.
We have students who love reading, and we have others who are reluctant. The Project LIT titles will give both groups of students choice and will help our students to continue to become strong readers.
