Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade English Language Arts teacher, teaching in a low-income area. Our school is in the heart of a very populated city. All students in the school are participating in free breakfast and lunch programs. The majority of my 5th grade students are second language learners.
The students I teach are enthusiastic and eager to learn.
I have two classes with 27 students in each section. I teach ELA and Social Studies. During our English Langauge Arts block I teach small group guided reading. I have five guided reading groups in each section. The students are grouped by their reading levels. I have some groups of students that are reading on a third grade level.
My Project
Since I teach 5th grade many of the reading resources I am given are on the reading level of a student in fifth grade. I don't always have the resources needed to teach guided reading to my low level readers. I constantly have to search for sets of books that they are able to read and understand.
In order to teach guided reading correctly I must have books that are on the appropriate reading level.
I will be able to add the donated books to my resources. This will allow me to teach using the correct leveled books. My students will be able to read and discuss books that they can and will enjoy reading.
