Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's the beginning of something big at our school. My students are putting on our first school musical... ever. If you have ever worked with kids and music, you must know how incredible it is to watch students grow and shine, artistically.
My kids are from a high-need urban neighborhood.
They are nearly all below the poverty line and are all minorities. But what's really important, is that they are talented, motivated, energetic and so excited to be part of this production. They spend hours after school, during their lunch periods and electives, working on harmonies and memorizing lines.
In this age of budget cutting, our school has a hard time with funding. The decisions about what materials to prioritize are tough and so much money has to go to basic supplies. There is no way our school could purchase microphones of any kind this year, or next, for that matter.
My Project
The cast experience is one that teaches students so much about their own growth, creativity and confidence. My kids have to sing, act, speak and move in front of each other and my colleagues, stepping out of any number of comfort zones. As they graduate and go on to college and then the "real world," I truly believe these performers will use skills they learned in this theater experience, be it adaptation, collaboration or risk-taking, or any number of other valuable tools from the trade.
This being many of these students' first stage experience, their voices cannot nearly project with the kind of volume our auditorium demands. The microphones are a key ingredient to this show coming together. As it stands now, we have two hand-held microphones and a few old hands-free sets that belong to a different school (and that work sporadically). What we need are our own wireless microphones that we can depend on.
Because we have never had a drama or musical theater program before, many of these performers have talents that their peers and teachers do not even know exist.
In all the years of the school, these actors/actresses have never had the opportunities they should have had. That changes this year. Starting this year, and continuing for years to come, these students' voices are going to be heard, loud and proud.
