Help the Lowest Readers Have Access to the Best Books!

Help me give my students some very low level books even though they are older children. They are frustrated with the shortage of cool books that they can choose from.

My Students

My school is an inner city school in Kansas City where children do not have access to a lot of books at home. We serve students that are 70% English as second language learners and we have over 20 languages spoken. The students in my reading classroom include a majority of English language learners who have been in the country for less than five years. They have "graduated" out of an ELL classroom and are now in my regular reading class that helps them get caught up to grade level. I have the lowest 20 kids in each grade 3-6. Many of my students came here as refugees from different countries. They have had few belongings of their own, due to being uprooted from their native country. This year, I have students from Thailand, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mexico and Guatemala. My dream is to operate a classroom library that students can check out books from me and take them home and maybe even possibly earn the chance to keep forever if they love the book and can explain why they want to keep it! I've never loved students as much as these, because they are so eager to learn!

My Project

My mostly English Language Learners struggle with finding books that they WANT to read that are at the level that they CAN read. All of the books that are being read by the other kids are just way too hard for them. They need to read books that are on a first grade level and they are in third through sixth grade. It's hard to find and they don't have any money to buy books anyway.

I would like to provide HIGH INTEREST books to these kids that are about subjects more for older students but written at the first grade level.

These are very hard to find and I would like to have a bunch of them to choose from. Please help ME get these specialized books into the hands of the most needy of children who are faced with the double-whammy of not having good command of the English language, being on free lunch (can't afford books of their own) and also two or three grade levels below the other students. I actually took the kids to the Amazon website and let them choose the books that interested them at the levels they could read. They became very excited and now will start asking me every day if he books have come yet, so help me out!! I need these as soon as possible!! Thanks for your generosity.
