Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. While some students are well off, this is not the case for all of them. Many of our students are on free and reduced-price lunch programs. This makes for an interesting dynamic in the classroom.
Our school sits in the heart of our little community in Phoenix.
This school is a close-knit community with long-standing traditions. We are a school full of pride. We work together to build a wonderful atmosphere which binds everyone.
My Project
Please help bring the classic novel "The Little Prince" written by Antoine de Saint Exupery to my 10th grade classroom! With the class set of novels, a special edition which includes an audio CD, the newest film version, and a special edition which enlightens on the behind-the-scenes of the novel, I can help bring this incredible world to my students! During this unit, we will read the text, discuss the text, and write essays which will include themes and symbolism.
"But the eyes are blind -- one must look with the heart" (Saint Exupery 97).
For such a brief text, this novella provides life lesson after life lesson for readers to ponder. Because students are so used to concrete stories with concrete problems and concrete answers, this story challenges them in vastly different ways. What if the answer isn't so simple? What if the kids are asked to think beyond themselves? What if there is no true resolution? How does one cope with a lack of "correct answers"? How do these questions ultimately build character and depth?
In a test-driven world, it's nice to consider using a text that challenges the inner workings of my sophomores. Numbers don't always matter as much as some people would like to think they do (as the Little Prince learns from one of the planets he visits in this story). Test scores won't necessarily follow my students throughout their lives...but it's difficult to forget a worthy story. A notable story can follow all of us for a lifetime...as I hope "The Little Prince" will follow my students on their journey beyond my classroom.
