Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are doing their best to succeed in a world in which the cards are stacked against them. We are a Title I school in which nearly 90% of our students live in poverty. 1 in 5 kids do not have enough to eat and 10% of children in the district are homeless. Statistically, our school demographics are 43% African American, 42% Hispanic, 3% Native American, 3% Multi-racial and 7% Caucasian.
Over 40% of students within our school district have a diagnosable mental illness.
And the worst part is, most never receive treatment. Many of my students have experienced tremendous trauma... from the loss of a parent, to experiencing abuse or neglect or the incarceration of a parent.
As a School Counselor, I want to ensure my students receive the help they need. They deserve a fighting chance to succeed, but it truly takes a village to raise a child.
My Project
Each year, the State Department of Education provides much needed professional development opportunities for school counselors across Oklahoma to improve their professional knowledge. This year, For Counselor's Only Conference, is about 120 miles away.
Unfortunately, our school budget has faced drastic cuts over the years, so there is no opportunity for me to be reimbursed for mileage, food, lodging or any other costs associated with this important training without the help of donors like you.
This training is specifically designed to support counselors in our efforts to provide data-driven, trauma-focused training to help us enhance and support our student's social and emotional learning.
