I teach 5th grade science to three sections of 25 students in an inner-city school that is part of a large, urban district. With over 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch, our students are faced with challenges inside and outside of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I do my best to ensure that each student is given the same opportunities as students in the surrounding districts. Our diversity is very reflective of the American culture, as are the school district's finances and those in it.
I want to be able to offer my students an education that is competitive to that of the more suburban surrounding districts.
Science can be a challenging subject in the 5th grade, but I strive to make it fun and effective and hope to make their learning experience one that will last with them long after they leave my classroom!
My Project
My students work very hard in the classroom. They get very few breaks because the curriculum is so extensive. Students get restless sitting in chairs all day, and need recess. However, I have very limited supplies. We need games for indoor recess, and balls for outside.
A student cannot concentrate on their work unless they burn off some of their excess energy.
That is where the recess equipment would really benefit my students. Energetic 5th graders need a way to relax a little when they do get a break!
Finally, research has proven that children learn better when they're given "brain breaks" throughout the day. Having games and sports equipment like balls will give students a chance to play. Supporting this project will give students that exact opportunity!
