Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students at MES are creative, gracious, and inquisitive. They love to complete projects that are hands-on, active, and challenging. They love to do these types of projects because they all have different ways of finding solutions and they enjoy sharing their discoveries with one another.
Each and every day they come to school they are ready to try something different or outside of the box.
This helps them to grow personally, academically and as a class. They help me to grow each and every day and they are my motivation.
My Project
Settled in a quiet neighborhood in Riverside County lies a 30-acre ranch of historic farmland which once was called home by a retired sea captain, Cornelius Jensen, and his wife, Mercedes Alvarado, in the early 1870s.
The historic ranch will offer students a peek into the past, depicting the way life was lived in the 1880s.
The home has been well preserved and students will be able to see furniture and utensils that belonged to the original owners. The ranch still has original farm tools, crops the family once tended to, orange groves, a windmill, a tank house, a milk house, and an archaeology table. The students will be guided into the museum where they can see additional farming equipment, Jensen's saddle, tools, a buggy, and other items the Jensen-Alvarado family used.
Docents will lead the students around the ranch and inside the home and museum in period-appropriate attire. They will guide the students in interactive experiences such as tortilla and butter making, adobe brick making, ice cream cranking, and washboard and wringer laundry. The students will have hands-on experiences at Jensen Alvarado and will go home with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
