My students need 10 sets of Elephant and Piggie books so that they can engage in literature circles with their classmates, while enjoying books on their own level.
Read, read, read! My second grade students feel as though my co-teacher and I are constantly asking them to read, and we are! As teachers we know how important it is for our students to not only learn how to read fluently, but also to develop a love of reading!
The students in our integrated co-teaching classroom are working hard to become strong readers.
Our students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Several of them are still learning English and many have a disability that makes learning more challenging for them. Due to these challenges, several of our students are reading below grade level. We see many of our students becoming reluctant to read in class because they feel frustrated by how difficult the process is for them. We want to help our students stay motivated to continue reading and hopefully to help them grow into students who love to read.
My Project
In our classroom we have one book that gets taken home more than any other book, There's a Bird on Your Head by Mo Willems. Our students adore this book! We only have one copy and the students are excited when it's their turn to read the book. The books in the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems are perfect for our classroom. These books use simple language that many of our students can read. All the Elephant and Piggie books are longer than the average lower leveled book. This allows students to build up their reading stamina and makes them feel less self-conscious about reading books that are at a lower level than some of their peers.
We are requesting 6 copies of each book so that the students can read these books in literature circles. We want to encourage a love of reading in our students while supporting their development of comprehension skills. By discussing these books in groups, the students can engage in higher level literacy skills while learning to love reading!
Second grade is the last chance students get to master their reading skills before they face the high-stakes literacy test in third grade.
We want to ensure that our students are competent and confident readers by the time they leave our classroom. Receiving these books would make a huge difference to many of our students. Our students would be able to read high quality literature on their own level and they would be able to share their love of these books with their classmates!
