My students need a subscription to Scholastic News/Science, the Spin and Learn vocabulary game, two Lakeshore reading comprehension activity stations and 8 chapter books.
As books continue to be replaced by Kindles, iPads and other modern technology, I continue to encourage my young readers to enjoy the experience of reading a hardcopy book. To smell and feel the delicate pages as the words transport them to a new time, a new place and a new adventure warms my heart.
Although our students come from various backgrounds, more than half of my students have a limited number of books at home.
In fact, most of the books are from the classroom library or the school library. With an increase in class sizes, it has become a challenge to make sure that all of my students are provided with engaging literacy materials. Countless hours are spent creating reading stations and literacy games to encourage their love of reading. The stations are used by the students during our guided reading rotations. For example, while I am working with a small group of students, the other students are working in small groups independently until it is their turn to work with me. Over the years, the stations and books are subjected to considerable wear and tear and are now in need of updating.
My Project
With the updated literacy materials I've requested, all of my students will have the opportunity to improve their reading comprehension skills. What I enjoy about the Scholastic News magazine is that it conveys global issues on a level that my students can understand. It also improves their vocabulary skills by introducing them to higher level words. A few years ago, the school was able to purchase a subscription and the students were always excited to receive their personal copy. Not only does it highlight current events, but it illustrates the connection that we share with others across the continents. The students will also improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills with the literacy stations I've requested. Working with a partner/small group with the activity will promote collaboration and their ability to verbalize their thinking.
Your donations will give me the opportunity to provide purposeful literacy materials to help my students practice their reading strategies in a fun and engaging way.
Having additional reading stations available, will allow more time for students to work independently, while I work one-on-one with struggling students. Lakeshore and Scholastic have committed years to making sure their products are effective and I have used them in the past with great success.
