As we move toward post-Pandemic-Model teaching to a regular classroom setting, these workbooks help my students reinforce their literacy skills which have declined for many over the last few years. This workbook sets up simple writing scaffolds with easy prompts to take notes, sketch, critique, and plan in writing to hone our literacy skills. For example, every Monday we reflect on famous quotes about art. Students read the famous quote, interpret the ideas presented, and write about how it can apply to their own art practice. With every project, these books keep us organized, on-task, and document our progress.
Your donation will provide my high school students with a literacy-based workbook to build a portfolio of work, write about their ideas and experiences, to express their lives through their artwork.
This workbook includes tons of supplemental information for my special needs students so that their parents will be better able to assist them at home as needed. When art can be such a creative class, this workbook provides a strong foundation of vocabulary, scaffolding for projects, and historical and cultural context which is so important to making meaningful expressive works of art.
Additionally, this book helps tie in core content as well. Art teachers know, when we grid, measure, and draw—we use geometry. When we make sculptures—we use engineering. When we mix colors—we reveal information about physics. When we create illustrations for stories—we learn about literature. When we review the styles of art from da Vinci to Banksy—we teach history. When we teach ceramics—we teach chemistry. When we write about art—we strengthen our writing skills. When we create works of art, we solve complex visual problems in creative ways. Art is the meeting place of all subjects.
