Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a low-income school in a borough neighborhood in the Belmont section of Bronx, NY. The majority of my students are academically and emotionally challenged and suffer from multiple traumas. As a result, they exhibit depression, anxiety, and aggressive behaviors on a daily basis. Their parents and caregivers are also struggling and aren't always able to provide their children with the tools they need to even have a chance at success. A large number of our students are living in temporary housing and are traveling over an hour each way just to get to school.
As a school counselor, when students walk into my room, they are scared, upset, guarded and/or ashamed.
I feel a great responsibility to provide students, staff, and parents the socio-emotional tools they need.
My Project
Our school is located in the Belmont section of the Bronx. A large percentage of my students live in shelters or are in rooms with many people. It is not possible for them to bathe every day. It is my hope that access to the items in this project will help meet the needs of students so that they are able to better engage in their education. I am requesting healthy snacks and toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.
This project supports students by providing everyday supplies to support their wellness - supplies that most of us take for granted. The items in this project are all things that students ask for or use on a regular basis.
Items such as water, mints, paper clips, etc are products are requested on a regular basis.
