I teach 2nd-5th graders with a variety of intellectual, social, and sensory impairments in my moderate/severe special education classroom. My staff and I work with each student to help them reach their individual goals, to be independent, responsible, and proud of the work they do.
I am so fortunate to continue teaching many of my students again this upcoming school year.
It was so awesome to see how much they learned this last school year. My students are loving, hard-working, and love to do their best. I am excited to see how much more my students improve this upcoming school year.
Almost all of my students are designated Exceptional Military Families. These students tend to move around a lot, and may have parents who are away from home for extended periods of time, which bring even more challenges to students who already face the challenges of having special needs.
My Project
Working in a public school comes with the challenges of lack of funding for all the extra supports and materials that students need.
My students are drawn to and enjoy everything technology-based.
I currently have a class set of Chromebooks for my students, however, I do not have headphones for them. This makes a fairly noisy work environment for students with special needs who have an even more difficult time focusing on their work. Having a class set of headphones will help my students better focus on their computer work.
Last year, I was fortunate enough to be gifted some Scholastic News magazines. My students loved following along as I taught lessons based on these materials. The magazines focused on current topics, are full of colorful pictures, activities, at their reading level, and even comes with interactive materials. They would love to continue reading Scholastic News magazines through the school year.
My students love to draw, write, and work on dry erase boards. I currently do not have enough for all my students. The boards would help make learning mobile, students would be able to work individually and independently, and they would be able to use them during break time at their desks.
I currently have handed down bean bag chairs that are leaking their stuffing. The bean bag chairs are in my quiet/break area, and are used a lot. Many of my students have trouble self-regulating their emotions, and being able to decompress and calm themselves while sitting or laying on the bean bags help greatly.
My students have lots of needs, and are better able to thrive with supports. Please consider donating to my project. Thank you so much.
