Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are excited about learning and come to class and club each day with determination and ambition. Each one of our students are special and come from diverse backgrounds. In our science classrooms, we teach critical thinking skills and language skills together, through the construction of interactive lab reports that utilize graphics, online simulations, and hands-on experiences. Additionally, we are unique in that we provide a high number of AP and dual credit programs. Thank you for your support.
My Project
We are seeking support for supplies to aid in the development of projects.
Project topics include yet are not limited to a variety of molecular and population genetic studies over several species including white shrimp & cacti.
Students will be utilizing the molecular biology supplies (green Dye, pipette tips, RNAse, and gloves) in a process known as polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR is a critical tool for science and genetic labs and frequently taught in college science programs. Specifically, students will be studying molecular markers (SSRs), previously used in humans to detect paternity, in order to gauge the health and determine the population substructure of each studied species. Students will visualize their results using gel electrophoresis and analyze data using STRUCTURE population genetics software.
Students will present findings at the Austin Regional Science Fair in February, 2018 and at their local science fair at Crockett High School in Dec 2017.
Students are paired with a mentor, usually a college professor, along with their teacher during the course of their project in which they gain an expert's opinion and analysis.
