Many of my middle school students have dyslexia or others struggle with reading. I teach all subjects to 6th and 7th grade students with special needs in a community school in Brooklyn. Having a "listening center" - where my students could listen to books on tape and read along - will help make reading possible for some students, and more enjoyable for the rest. In addition, I can obtain recordings of textbooks, so my students will have more exposure to grade-level material in social studies and science even though they are not able to read the textbooks on their own. All that is needed is a listening center - a tape player designed for classroom use, with multiple headphone attachments so students can listen and practice reading on their own or in groups. This will enable my students to practice reading independently, and they will enjoy it more as well! It will also allow them to use the same textbooks other students use, so they can reach the same level of understanding despite their difficulties.
