My Students

My students are autistic and have behavior problems. They are slow learners and are functioning at a lower grade level. They are in a class of 6:1:1 which means 1 teacher, 6 students, and 4 teacher assistants. They are visual learners and enjoy lots of hands-on activities. Some have knowledge of computer and can educational games and music. The others can sit and listen to a story with visuals. My school is a special education District 75 high school. I will be very happy to have this computer so my students can have some computer time every day. My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.

My Project

Computers can be an ideal tool for communicating, creating and playing for an individual; especially for my students who have been diagnosed with autism.

The potential for students with autism using the computer is not just educational, but therapeutic.

My students will be able to listen to music, engage in a story, and do hands-on activities. My students, for example, can use the mouse to draw some funny thing and also focus on visuals and sounds. They will be very happy to have a computer on their desk for a few hours per day, which will make them calm and able to focus for longer periods of time. Most of my students do not have a personal computer at home, so at school it would be a great way to give them some personal computer time.

Donations towards this project will enhance my student’s awareness of technology, and improve the student’s knowledge of computers. This computer will help them to enjoy their time spent at school

This project will change my student’s perspective on learning. The ability to utilize a classroom computer independently will improve their skills. Which may lead them to be more independent in the future. Also, they will have the option to work independently using their own learning techniques; which is difficult and not only with pencil and paper, but also with technology.
