Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us retire our overhead projector with its black and white images and cumbersome transparencies and bring new technology, color, and versatility into our classroom.
My fifth grade math and science classroom is made up of predominately English language learners with limited exposure to the natural world around them, but a TON of enthusiasm about learning.
They are serious scholars who are motivated to do their best, and for many of them, be the first in their families to attend college. Understanding directions or new concepts can be challenging for them when presented orally. Currently, I do my best to use the whiteboard, overhead projector, and pictures I've printed out, but this only goes so far.
My Project
With a new document camera and projector, I will be able to share images with my class in a way that is big enough for them to see and doesn't require preparing transparencies. In science class, students will be able to view color photos from books, 3D artifacts such as shark's teeth, and experiments in process on a large screen. In math, students will be able to visualize directions and demonstrations of new concepts as I guide them to new understandings. In both math and science, I will use the document camera to display exemplary student work, and also to show common errors. My students will be able to not only hear, but see, one another's thinking in a way that is not possible solely on a whiteboard.
Your donation will help bring math and science to life in my classroom for years to come.
Young scientists and mathematicians will be able to visualize new concepts, thus increasing their understanding and leading them to academic success.
