Help Students Refuel at School to Maintain Energy and Focus!

Help me give my students jerky, cheese and crackers, soups, chips, and fruit snacks. A small sandwich maker for students to make a hot cheese sandwich would help when students are especially hungry.

My Project

My students get on the school bus at 6:30 a.m. but don’t eat lunch until 12:30 p.m! That’s a long time to go without a snack. Snacking is important for students, because they have smaller stomachs than adults and cannot necessarily eat enough to stay full in one meal or sitting. Research shows students should be able to snack every three to four hours over the course of the day. Snacking throughout the day not only ensures students stay full, it also helps them learn healthy eating habits, like eating appropriate amounts and only when they're hungry. Small, healthy snacks throughout the day prevent patterns of boredom eating, or eating based on emotional factors. This is especially important for students with special needs, as they need to be taught appropriate eating habits. Snacks like jerky, cheese and crackers, soups, chips, and fruit snacks would be so helpful. A small sandwich maker where students could make a hot cheese sandwich would help when students are especially hungry. A water dispenser to encourage water drinking would promote drinking water. My students need to be able to refuel throughout the day to maintain energy and focus on academics and life skills, and that's where snacking comes in.

Our school has a very high poverty rate and most students are struggling at home.

Thus, they can't provide snacks from home. In the school setting, students who struggle with hunger face: lack of concentration, slower recall, difficulty paying attention, diminished academic performance, emotional and behavioral difficulties, issues with aggression and anxiousness, difficulty getting along with other kids, and hyperactivity.
