We are an urban public school that has adopted AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in an effort to get more secondary students enrolled in a four year college program. I teach 7th grade Spanish and I teach an AVID class also.

My goal is to help students become better writers and readers simultaneously. Good literature will help them to understand syntax better. Most of my AVID students would be the first in their family to go to college and ALL of my students in this class want to go to college.

Quality literature engages my students, that is why I am requesting 19 copies of Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II. Ultimately, my goal is to use good literature to teach writing. Writing is probably the most difficult thing for my students to succeed in. Students simply don't read enough. Their college admissions will depend partially on how well they can write. Your support could make a difference for many students. Not just this year, but years to come, as I will use these books year after year.
