Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Make Progress, Not Excuses!" my students shout daily. The progress they have made this year is great, but we need help! Provided with the best tools out there, they can achieve outstanding success in math, which will inspire them and put them on a path to success in future educational endeavors.
My students are some of the strongest individuals I know.
As special education students, many of them lack the motivation and desire to do well in school because they have been told all their lives that they are not capable of achieving at the same levels as their peers. Day in and day out, my students talk about giving up, but they know better than to talk that way in my class. When they walk into math class every day, they are expected to work and produce results just like every other student in the building. Holding them accountable and setting high expectations for them has allowed me to develop strong relationships with them. In turn, we have fostered a community of learners and goal-setters. We are constantly setting small goals to help us reach our big goal (setting ourselves up for success in high school so that we are prepared for college). My students thrive when they are given the opportunity to use math manipulatives because it allows them to conceptualize their learning.
My Project
Using manipulatives is the best way for my students to learn. In fact, these tools actually prompt them to think more critically about what they are learning, which is ultimately what I want them to do. Becoming critical thinkers can open doors for students. Conceptual understanding through the use of algebra tiles would benefit them greatly! As they know, success in algebra is one main component of being "college ready." Through using these algebra tiles, my students will be laying a conceptual foundation for the rest of their math education.
Please, please, help my students receive the best understanding of algebra possible.
They are hard-working and dedicated young adults, who have truly enriched my life. Knowing that others care about them is huge; knowing there are other people out there who believe they can one day go to college, can be life-changing for them. These math tools can provide over 50 students with an ability to understand algebra and a desire to continue onto more complex math as they get older.
