My students come from diverse economic and racial backgrounds. My students are kindergarteners, first and second graders who attend a small school of about 300 students. Our school is located in an urban, mostly low income area.
My students are active, energetic learners who require multisensory instruction across content areas.
In order to meet the needs of all students and keep students engaged, I must use a variety of instructional tools and materials that provide students with hands on, tactile learning opportunities. My students learn best when provided with multiple learning opportunities that allow them to have hands on experiences.
My Project
A new, colorful rug will provide my students with a more welcoming, warm learning environment. A new rug will also allow an additional flexible seating option for my students. Having an additional flexible seating option during independent work will allow my students the ability to make a choice that is right for him or her. Encouraging students to get comfortable as they learn will help them stay engaged and focused.
Ensuring that students are comfortable is an important component in motivating students.
I have observed significant differences in my students' work production when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when required to sit at a desk or a table. This new rug will allow additional option for student choice and, in turn, will increase student engagement.
