Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know how overwhelming it is for students to walk into our library and see 14,000 books to choose from? We want to help our students connect with favorite series that they'll return to again and again.

Our preK-5th grade elementary school students come from hard-working families, many from single-parent households or blended families.

Over half of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Our school has a caring atmosphere, and we encourage each other to do our best every day. Our principal challenges our students to read for at least an hour a day.

My Project

When you're just learning to read, the library can be an overwhelming place. We want to make it as easy as possible for our students to find the books that will help them to love reading and to practice their skills. Many of our students love to read books in a series with familiar characters like Fancy Nancy, Geronimo Stilton, Hank the Cowdog, or Scaredy Squirrel. The help-yourself book boxes would help our students find the series books they're looking for quickly and easily. I've tried using plastic baskets from the dollar store, but they don't hold up to daily use by hundreds of students. They fall apart.

These bright blue boxes will be labeled with the series title, and they will be sturdy enough to be used for many years, helping thousands of students to grow as readers.

You know yourself that it can be a challenge to find a good book in a large library or book store. Please help our students overcome that challenge by helping us to add the help-yourself book boxes to our school library!
