My students need exposure to great literature. Students in the classroom range in reading abilities and many of them have never fallen in love with reading. Weekly book talks will help!
Our district is in a small town. We have incredible support of our community and parents, but resources are not always readily available.
I am responsible for 52 students in social students and literacy, and 49 students for speech communication.
Our school has a wonderful school climate and a very diverse population of students, including students from the Lummi Tribe. We have free and reduced lunch rate of 42.2%. We also house a Life Skills program, as well as a Behavior program in our building.
My Project
Escaping into a book. Many of my students have not had the pleasure of picking up a book and escaping into another world. I have quite a diverse group of students with a wide span of reading levels, which adds to the challenge.
My goal is to expose students to a variety of literature by having book talks.
Every week I will discuss 4-5 books and allow students to check out these books to read on their own. Once I know which books really interest students, I can help them find other books in the same genre to keep their interest in reading alive.
I truly feel that once a student finds just one book that touches their heart, they are more open to reading and finding new books. I really want my students to want to read because I know how much this will help their overall education.
