My Students

My students and their families have a strong sense of pride in a historic, neighborhood school, which has educated generations of Memphis Orange Mound community members. 94% are classified as economically disadvantaged. With support from the district and a great leadership team, my school's math teachers are collaborating across grades and across content areas to strengthen student achievement and prepare our students for success in college and careers. Since 2013, the average math ACT score for our students has grown from 15 to 16; with your help, we hope to reach 20 by 2018.

My students work incredibly hard; they work jobs late at night, take care of their siblings and cousins, take responsibility for finding their own transportation to and from school, lead extra-curricular sports and clubs, and show up every day ready to engage in math content.

They deserve activities and math practice that will address their specific skill gaps, strengthen their mathematical problem solving, address their specific skill gaps in rigorous math concepts, and raise their ACT scores. To this end, I regularly create graphic organizers to help students understand key concepts. Now I just need to print them!

My Project

Every day, I make my students graphic organizers to help them make connections between concepts we discuss, gain strategies to approach different types of math, and as a useful resource to refer back to as they solve increasingly rigorous problems.

Through the course of the year, my students essentially build their own math textbook, as they complete and maintain each day's graphic organizer in their interactive binders.

We need this paper so that I can continue to provide each of my students with graphic organizers and they can build upon their prior knowledge and grow their brains!

Additionally, my students frequently work in groups at the dry erase boards. They love collaborating, catching each other's mistakes, and teaching each other how to solve the most difficult problems. Some of the money will go towards dry erase board cleaner so that my students can continue to work together on math problems at the boards.
